Hwa Chong International School (HCIS) is located in Bukit Timah and offers the Cambridge IGCSE to its international students. The school combines a rigorous academic programme with a strong co-curricular culture, producing students who are competitive in the Cambridge IGCSE examinations.
IGCSE at Hwa Chong International
HCIS students typically sit five to eight IGCSE subjects, with most students targeting A* and A grades in their core subjects. Mathematics, the sciences, and Economics are the subjects where students most frequently seek external support.
The Cambridge IGCSE Extended papers (Paper 4 for Mathematics and Paper 4 for sciences) require a high level of application — the ability to work through multi-step problems and explain scientific concepts in written form. Many students who understand the content conceptually still lose marks on explanation questions and structured response sections.
IGCSE Mathematics at HCIS
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics Extended is demanding in its scope and the depth of application required. HCIS students preparing for the Extended paper need to be comfortable with algebraic manipulation, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and probability — all under timed conditions.
Our tutors work through the Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics syllabus systematically, with extensive past paper practice at the Extended level. We focus specifically on the types of questions that differentiate A from A* performance: multi-step algebra problems, circle theorems, and vectors.
IGCSE Sciences at HCIS
For IGCSE Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, the Extended paper requires students to apply their knowledge to novel contexts — which is where students who have learned content passively often fall short. Our science tutors focus on developing the analytical writing skills needed for the Paper 4 questions: how to describe and explain experiments, how to evaluate data, and how to draw valid conclusions.
We have supported many HCIS students through the IGCSE sciences and have a detailed understanding of the Cambridge mark scheme requirements for each science subject.
Small Group and Online Sessions
Our tuition is conducted in small groups (maximum 4 students) or one-on-one. HCIS students who prefer online learning can join our live Zoom sessions — the format is identical to in-person classes, with digital problem sets shared before and after each session.
